Appeal to find camper van driver who left scene of fatal pony crash on Pound Lane, near Burley
A REWARD of up to £5,000 is being offered in the hunt for a camper van driver who left the scene of a collision which killed a New Forest pony.
Campaign group New Forest Roads Awareness has launched an appeal after the bay filly was reportedly struck by a silver or grey Volkswagen in Pound Lane, Burley.
The incident took place at 2.30pm on Sunday, and the animal died a short time later.
A witness said the van’s female driver spoke to them at the scene, but then drove off towards Thorney Hill without leaving details.
She was said to have had her daughter with her in the van, which had headlight damage.
Posting on Facebook, a New Forest Roads Awareness spokesperson called for witnesses and those with dash cam footage to come forward.
Garages, repair shops or hire companies are also asked to get in touch if they have had a similarly damaged van brought to them.
“The impact was enough that this bay filly staggered off a few yards and died,” the post said.
“She has not, as far as we are aware, reported the incident to the police.
“There is an up to £5,000 reward for anyone who reports a hit-and-run driver, following a conviction.”
Those with information should contact Hampshire police on 101 or verderers on 023 8028 2052.
