Met Office ice warning for parts of the new Forest on Sunday 18th December

A WARNING for ice has been issued for parts of the New Forest this weekend.

The Met Office has put in place a yellow alert for Sunday morning, covering a large part of southern UK, including areas in the northern Forest.

The national weather agency said a period of rain and snow falling on frozen surfaces will result in icy conditions which are likely to cause travel disruption and risk of injury from slippery patches.

A Met Office spokesperson added: "Widespread frozen surfaces ahead of a band of rain, sleet and snow pushing across the UK though Sunday leads to a risk of icy conditions through the morning, before conditions turn much milder.

"Any sleet or snow in the south or south-east will likely only last an hour or two, before turning readily to rain, but this [will remain on] frozen surfaces for a time.

"Any slight accumulations, likely no more than 1-2cm, and mostly over higher ground, will melt rapidly, which may briefly add to the ice risk.

"In addition to the ice and snow risk, strong winds are expected, mainly over higher ground."

The alert is in place 3am-11am.
