On entering the house, the pensioner, who was in her 90s, was found and pronounced dead.

Police were alerted about two hours later and, referring to the incident as an “unexpected death”, a Hampshire force spokesperson said her next of kin had been informed.

The fire service confirmed it was carrying out a joint investigation with police into the cause of the blaze.

The force spokesperson said: “Our Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service partners informed us of a fire at a property on Kivernell Road, shortly after 11pm on Wednesday 27th November.

“Sadly, a woman in her 90s was pronounced dead at the scene. Formal identification has still yet to take place, but the woman’s next of kin have been informed.

“Officers continue to carry out enquiries regarding the unexpected death and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
