Father-and-son Hythe Sailing Club duo take advantage of floods to take their boat on-road
A FATHER and son from Hythe Sailing Club took full advantage of the weekend’s soggy conditions with a quick voyage on a flooded road.
The unusual sight of a small yacht floating along Shore Road could be seen on Sunday morning after torrential rainfall left many areas across the New Forest and Christchurch waterlogged.
Marcin Wojcik (48) and his 17-year-old son Filip – a competitive international dinghy sailor, embraced the rare opportunity to take the unusual trip.
“It was exciting,” Marcin told the A&T. “We were overtaken at one point by a car that was semi-submerged in the water.
“My son loved it. It was just a bit of a different thing to do.”
The pair were inspired to take their boat on-road after going to the club for a bout of training in the morning.
Marcin estimated the street was covered by over a foot of water.
“There wasn’t much wind and we just drifted along, so when I saw the road was flooded I thought we could try the boat on there for a bit of fun,” he continued.
“We went all round the sailing club and passed the Sea Scouts and then stayed on the road all the way back to the club.”
Marcin added this was the first time he had seen such a high tide in around 15 years, and he had never sailed on a flooded road before.
