Letters: I love my country but I do despair at its lack of direction

SIR – Some years ago I read a description of a Second World War Allied multi-engined aircraft, given by many of those who flew it, to wit “10,000 rivets in loose formation”.

It seems to me that, paraphrased, this could well be a description applicable to today's Parliament in general and the Tory Party in particular.

There are 300-plus Tory MPs running in many different directions, cabinet ministers accepting positions from which they will resign to better stab the PM in the back (shades of Brutus and Cassius) and displays of no loyalty to either their party, those of us who elected them or the country.

Is it little wonder that international trust in the United Kingdom is declining or that the EU27 are laughing at us whilst we run about like headless chickens?

In the wings is a party with some members in favour of leaving the European monolith but deciding to play the political game chasing the dream of power at the next election and governed by a leader and faction whose first executive declared action will be to re-nationalise everything already owned by other countries in Europe and Asia.

The money for the compensation will come from increased taxation of the wealthy.

Other parties in the Mother of Parliaments dream of home rule (given the right trigger), increased income to retain their allegiance or increased powers of self-determination.

Despite two years of lies, myths and Parliamentary negativity, there is an increased likelihood that we will remain in the EU but on greatly disadvantageous terms.

I love my country but I do despair at its lack of direction and apologetic interface with the world at large.

Ralph Long,

Milford
