Letters: It's the Brexit hardliners who are the saboteurs

SIR - In the referendum vote in June 2016 the voters were asked two questions, Leave or Remain.

There was nothing there about the World Trade Organisation, or a hard or soft Brexit. The Government sent a letter to everybody in the country saying that they would carry out the wishes of the people.

They have done that with the Withdrawal Bill, which is preliminary to the negotiations to trade relations with the EU etc.

A group of Tory MP’s and the European Research Group of Tory MP’s have this pipe dream that we have a perfect Brexit and we go World Trade Organisation rules, which means a hard border in Ireland and high disruption on our borders for customs controls and tariffs on our imported food from the EU which would put up our food costs. Nobody wants this, especially exporters.

Parliament voted against a No Deal. These hard-line Tory Brexiteers, who will not get behind their party and government, I would not call Brexiteers, but saboteurs.

They are causing millions of pounds to be spent on a No Deal, when that money could be better used to prevent cuts to the country’s needs.

People will have a chance in future elections to make their feelings known. To stop this deadlock there would have to be to have a coalition with Labour on a bespoke customs union for a soft Brexit.
