Letters: No deal Brexit is still better than a bad deal

SIR – It is not difficult to understand why Brexit is deadlocked.

In June 2016 the British people voted to leave the EU in the referendum primarily to regain our full national independence, limit and control immigration and to regain our historic 200 mile maritime limit, the loss of which has crippled our fishing industry.

Parliament passed the withdrawal agreement and we appeared to be in a strong position to negotiate our exit from the EU.

The voters in 406 constituencies out of 650 had voted Leave in the referendum but it has since turned out that 481 MPs in the House of Commons are pro-Remain and have been doing all they can to overturn the result of the largest vote in British history either to achieve such a soft Brexit that it will be equivalent to staying in the EU but without any say in its decisions or just to remain in the EU as we are now.

Either course would be a betrayal of the 17,410,742 who voted Leave in the referendum or since the people are constitutionally sovereign, it would amount to treason.

The governing party and their other supporters would no doubt pay a heavy price for this betrayal at the next general election.

Before it’s too late the Prime Minister should recall and act on her earlier words: “No deal is better than a bad deal.”
