Letters: The police have lost their way on roads enforcement

Sir - On Sunday 19th May I was driving from Lymington to Totton and, as usual, drove slowly within the speed limits.

But when I arrived home I was approached by a policeman who stated "a member of the public has reported you for erratic driving" and proceeded to breathalyse me.

I was under the limit but it infuriated me that another person could phone 999 and report me and the police would act on it. It was probably the motorist who was upset at me keeping to the speed limit.

The following day I was driving through Brockenhurst when a Volvo car overtook me at speed, breaking the limit, so I went to Lymington police station to report the motorist.

I was told it would be my word against the other motorist and unless it was dangerous driving it would not be reported.

How come I can be reported for supposedly "erratic driving" but a speeding motorist is not able to be?

Also, the number of vehicles that at night have illegal headlights, either only one or full beam, infuriates me!

The police are also busy booking motorists for exceeding the speed limit by a few miles per hour when genuine speedsters seemingly get away with it.

Criminals get away with crime while motorists get hounded.
