Lymington man Joe Chamberlain launched ‘serious, unprovoked’ attack on pregnant woman

A LYMINGTON man who launched a serious, unprovoked attack on a pregnant woman has avoided going straight to jail.

Joe Chamberlain (28), of Meadow Road, pleaded not guilty, but was later found guilty of assaulting the mum-to-be on 13th May last year in St Thomas Street, Lymington.

Judge Anthony Callaway, sitting at Southampton Magistrates’ Court, handed down a four-month jail term, suspended for 18 months, with a requirement for Chamberlain to remain under the supervision of probation services.

Court paperwork said the offence was so serious that “only a custodial sentence can be justified”.

It continued: “The reasons for this are because it was an unprovoked attack of a serious nature (and the) victim was pregnant at the time.”

The judge ordered Chamberlain to complete a 32-day rehabilitation programme and 10 days’ unpaid community work over 12 months.

Chamberlain was also ordered to pay £620 costs and a £154 surcharge.
