A Lymington man Adam Gosling abseils down the Empire State Building in New York in front of Princess Beatrice and Jared Leto
A LYMINGTON man abseiled down the Empire State Building in New York in front of Princess Beatrice and alongside Hollywood actor Jared Leto for charity.
Adam Gosling was in a party of 20 brave Outward Bound supporters who made history by performing the daring stunt – the first of its kind – to raise funds for the organisation.
Donations so far have totalled a whopping £2.4 million for the worldwide networking charity which changes youngsters’ lives through challenge, learning and adventure.
A delighted Adam said after completing the challenge: “Nothing ventured nothing gained – that was my mantra on the terrifying lift journey beyond the viewing platform, it was so worth it!
“The excitement, the view, the support team’s enthusiasm was infectious yet reassuring, the nerves, the adrenalin rush, and of course the abseil.
“The sense of triumph at the bottom and the feeling that we were all in it together with the other abseilers was incredible. It still feels a bit like a dream, but I am so proud that I have done it and for such a great charity as well.
“Outward Bound is all about discovering what you're capable of and pushing beyond what you think you can achieve. What better way to do it than this?”
Princess Beatrice congratulated Adam and the other participants, saying: “Bringing young people out of their comfort zones and supporting them to achieve something they never thought possible is what Outward Bound is all about.
“I am so happy to offer my support as a trustee and I am a great admirer of Outward Bound and all they stand for – these participants really are an inspiration.”
Leto kicked off the Big Rappel, which spans nearly 900 feet from the building’s iconic spire down to the 30th floor.
He said: “Recently, I climbed up the fin of the Empire State Building to announce Thirty Seconds to Mars’ world tour and now as the tour begins, I’m excited to head the opposite direction and rappel down to shine a light on the incredible work of Outward Bound.”
