Lymington man Thomas Myers took own life ingesting household chemicals, inquest hears

A MAN with Asperger’s Syndrome who had been bullied as a child took his own life by ingesting chemicals in his Lymington home, an inquest has heard.

Thomas Myers (21) died at Southampton General Hospital on 22nd July 2021 after being rushed there in an ambulance, Winchester Coroners’ Court heard.

Coroner Christopher Wilkinson told the inquest Mr Myers “found it hard to communicate with people” and, after moving to Lymington with his family from London, began to isolate himself.

The inquest heard Mr Myers had been “addicted” to computers and programming, and had “started drinking a lot” and smoking cannabis while living in the Forest.

Mr Myers had become “nocturnal”, sleeping through the day, and was later signed off work after his family’s concern grew, the coroner said.

Having attempted suicide by hanging in 2021, Mr Myers was later put on painkillers tramadol and anti-depressant sertraline, and began attending counselling.

The inquest heard Mr Myers’ mother was worried he was suffering from bipolar disorder and was concerned to know her son was “feeling suicidal on a daily basis”.

The inquest heard on the day he died, Mr Myers was found at home after consuming household chemicals. He was rushed from his home by paramedics to Southampton General Hospital, where he later died.

Recording a verdict of suicide, the coroner said he was “desperately sorry” for Mr Myers’ family.

The medical cause of death was recorded as methemoglobinemia, a condition which starves bodily tissues of oxygen and is caused by ingesting oxidising chemical agents.
