Magical musical Matilda opens at Southampton Mayflower
INSPIRED by the much-loved Roald Dahl book, the multi-award-winning show Matilda the Musical has opened at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre.
Winner of over 95 international awards, including 23 for best musical, the show has been seen by more than eight million people worldwide.
It tells the story of Matilda, an extraordinary little girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.
Inspired by the 1988 book, Matilda The Musical was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered at the RSC’s Stratford-upon-Avon home in November 2010, before transferring to London’s West End in October 2011, where it opened to rave reviews.
The New York production opened in April 2013 at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre.
It then swept the board at the 2012 Olivier Awards, with a record-breaking seven awards, and won four Tony Awards and a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre for the four girls sharing the title role on Broadway.
West End star Elliot Harper will play Miss Trunchbull, Carly Thoms will be Miss Honey and Sebastien Torkia and Rebecca Thornhill will continue in the roles of Mr and Mrs Wormwood.
The role of Matilda will be shared by Sophia Ally, Scarlett Cecil, Annalise Bradbury, Poppy Jones, Emma Moore and Nicola Turner.
Matilda The Musical is written by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, and developed and directed by Matthew Warchus.
It will be at Southampton Mayflower Theatre until Saturday 6th July. Tickets are £25.50 to £64.50.
