Man found dead at recreation ground on New Year's Day is named

THE man whose body was found on New Year’s Day at Gang Warily recreation ground in Fawley has been named.

The identity of 31-year-old Phillip Cavill was released by the coroner’s office in Winchester after an inquest was opened and adjourned this morning (Thursday).

Mr Cavill lived in Roewood Close, Holbury. The cause of his death has not been determined as results are still awaited on toxicology and histology tests.

As reported in the A&T, officers and paramedics were called at about 10.30am on 1st January to Gang Warily, in Blackfield, which is run by Fawley Parish Council.

The emergency services’ activity was reported to be near a pond at the site, off Newlands Road close to the oil refinery.

At the time Hampshire Constabulary said it was treating the death as “unexplained but not suspicious”.

Today a police spokesperson confirmed there were no ongoing investigations and the case had been handed over to the coroner.

On New Year’s Day local residents on social media reported seeing what looked like a body bag at the scene, which was cordoned off.

There are two fishing lakes at the recreation ground, which is the home ground of Blackfield and Langley FC. It was closed for the bank holiday when the body was discovered.

A full inquest has been scheduled for 2nd June in Winchester.
