Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary marks 40th anniversary of DC Martin Wiltshire’s death in Ringwood plane crash with memorial service at the Church of St Peter & St Paul on Market Place

A MEMORIAL service is being held in Ringwood to honour a detective 40 years after his death in a plane crash.

DC Malcolm Wiltshire died in the line of duty when the aircraft on which he was serving as photographer crashed while observing traffic congestion in the town on 15th May 1985.

His partner, PC Gerald Spencer, who was the pilot, also lost his life.

On Thursday – the anniversary of the tragedy – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary is hosting the service at Ringwood’s Church of St Peter & St Paul.

Although commemorating DC Wiltshire’s life and service, the force said both officers’ sacrifices would be acknowledged.

This comes after the detective’s family was invited to Windsor Castle last year to see him become one of the first recipients of The Elizabeth Emblem.

Presented by the King, the commendation recognised ‘A Life Given in Service’.

Acting Chief Constable Sam de Reya said: “It is so important that as a police family we commemorate officers who have lost their lives while in service.

“DC Malcolm Wiltshire embodied the true spirit of heroism, facing danger with unwavering courage to protect our community, and I was so pleased to see his service recognised recently by the King.

“Malcolm has never been forgotten by us as a force – his legacy of selflessness and valour will forever inspire us.”
