STRONG winds are forecast to hit the New Forest and Christchurch at the weekend, according to a nationwide weather warning.

Yesterday (Tuesday) the Met Office issued a yellow alert, the lowest level, for the whole of the UK for winds of up to 80mph in exposed areas on Saturday evening and throughout Sunday.

It said: “Gusts of 50 to 60mph are likely across many inland areas, with gusts of 70, possibly 80mph around some exposed coasts and hills, especially in the north and west. Heavy rain will be an additional hazard, especially over western hills.

“Winds of this strength across a wide area have the potential to produce disruption to transport, along with some coastal impacts, especially in the west.”

The weather warning said the conditions were expected to last from about 6pm tomorrow until shortly before midnight on Sunday.

The Met Office expected some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport, with a “small chance” that some roads and bridges will close.

Coastal routes and coastal communities could be affected by spray and large waves, it added, with a “slight risk” also of cuts to power and mobile coverage, and building damage, such as tiles being blown off.

Deputy chief meteorologist Dan Harris said: “Although still a long way off in forecast terms, there are relatively strong signals for very unsettled weather arriving this weekend, and probably continuing well into next week.

“Along with a spell of heavy rain, widespread gales are likely, and severe gales are possible in more exposed parts of the west and north of the UK.”

He added: “There is potential for national severe weather warnings to be issued, so we are advising people to keep a close eye on the latest forecast and updates from the Met Office.”
