Met Office issues yellow weather warning for strong winds across New Forest and Christchurch as Storm Nelson set to arrive
STRONG winds up to 70mph are expected across the New Forest and Christchurch tomorrow (Thursday).
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind between 7am and 6pm, with gusts of 50mph widely expected.
Named by Spanish forecasters, Storm nelson is set to hit the region, with some exposed coastal spots in for gusts of up to 70mph, and large waves also likely.
The warning states: “The strong winds will be accompanied by heavy, squally showers with the possibility of hail and thunder in some locations.
“Hail won't fall everywhere, but where it does it can quickly make road surfaces slippery, while surface water and spray are likely to worsen travel conditions rather more widely.”
As a result there could be some disruption to rail, air and ferry services, while some roads and bridges may close.
There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage, it is warning.
Large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties could cause injuries and pose a danger to life.
It recommends securing loose household items such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences.
Those near the coast are urged to safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves.
It adds: “Even from the shore, large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs, know your route, and keep dogs on a lead.”
