Midweek cup matches: New Milton and Bashley glide through with wins
NEW MILTON Town await Hythe & Dibden in the next round of the Bournemouth Senior Cup after a 3-0 win over Verwood All Stars.
In the first half, the Linnets dominated possession and had several goal-scoring opportunities which were squandered. Midway through the first period, New Milton went in front when Rhys Jones’ inviting cross was cannoned home by Joe Petty.
After the goal, New Milton continued to assert their dominance with goalkeeper Luke Dennison rarely called into action. On the stroke of half-time, Sam White failed to keep his cool from six yards out as he pushed the ball wide of the far post.
Following the restart, the Linnets remained in the driving seat and scored two goals in quick succession to wrap up the tie. Petty grabbed his second of the game while White made up for his blunder in the first half with a smart finish.
New Milton will host fellow Sydenhams Division One side Hythe & Dibden in the next round.
Meanwhile, Bashley also booked their place in the next round of the Hampshire Senior Cup with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Folland Sports.
Bashley took a first-half lead when Connor Whiteley's effort wrong-footed the keeper to put the hosts in front. However, the black-and-golds were pegged back minutes into the second half when Tom Hawkins slotted home from the penalty spot.
Refusing to let their cup dreams wither away, Bashley went on the front foot, scoring three unanswered goals. Jack Nicholls, Harry McGrath and an own goal ensured Bashley grabbed a spot in the next round with a resounding win.
Bashley will travel to Lymington Town on Saturday in a return to Sydenhams Wessex league football.
