RESIDENTS can have a say on plans to intensify commercial activity at Marchwood military port which aim to create more than 1,000 jobs.

As reported in the A&T, a pre-application document submitted to New Forest District Council said train and lorry movements at the site are also expected to increase during the proposed expansion.

Operator Solent Gateway outlined intentions to nearly double hardstanding and storage space to just over 40 hectares as well as adding a second oversize-vehicle entrance and new offices.

Now it is inviting the public to comment via a virtual exhibition being held online due to coronavirus guidance on gatherings.

Port director Richard Parkinson said: “Our proposals for the port will bring significant economic growth and investment to the local area.

“Since taking over port operations, we have created 85 new jobs and our proposals will generate circa 1,100 additional new jobs on-site and in the supply chain.

“We are already working with several local small and medium-sized enterprise companies and remain committed to using local businesses to assist with the port redevelopment.”

Solent Gateway gained a 35-year lease for the site in 2016 from landowner the Ministry of Defence.

The consultation is in advance of a number of planning submissions lined up for about 71 hectares at the site off Normandy Way.

If given the go-ahead, container stacks could rise to about 16 metres, with more visits by ships, the pre-application document said, but there were no plans for fixed gantry cranes, like those at Southampton, or new jetties.

There could be up to about 22 rail movements a week, it added, but did not give an estimate of lorry numbers. Up to 700 berths a year are anticipated.

Those unable to see the plans online can attend the exhibitions at Marchwood village hall on 25th September between 1pm and 9pm and on 26th September between 10am and 4pm.

It is essential to book a place by calling 023 8017 5295 or emailing info@solentgatewayconsultation.com. The consultation period runs until 23rd October.
