Motorist stuck in flood waters on A338 at Fordingbridge rescued by Hampshire police and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service
A MOTORIST got into deep water at Fordingbridge and had to be rescued by a passing 4x4 driver.
Police were on the scene working with firefighters early yesterday morning (Monday) to recover the vehicle, which had become stuck in flood water on the A338.
Fordingbridge police said on Facebook: "Thankfully a passing 4x4 off-road vehicle was nearby and helped pull the vehicle and occupants clear, with water just below knee height in places."
They warned: "The Avon Valley area has a high number of areas with fords and large areas of free standing water which can be dangerous, with hidden hazards including pot holes, broken road surfaces and debris.
"Even though fire officers were in water with multiple blue lights vehicles visible, one vehicle drove directly in their path at inappropriate speed, causing heavy wash and police needing to challenge with voice and torches to stop the driver to protect the fire crew.
"If you encounter flood water look to divert or turn back as no journey is worth risking injury or significant damage to your vehicle.
"Unfortunately, the vehicle involved in this incident suffered significant flooding of the interior with unknown mechanical damage.
"Always respect the power of nature and don't overestimate your own driving abilities as there have been several other reports of vehicles getting into difficulties in rural fords this week.
"On this occasion, due to the hazard presented to other road users, the road was closed."
