New NFDog Ambassador Scheme aimed at making New Forest dog owners more responsible
MOVES to encourage dog owners to act more responsibly by picking up after their pets and keeping them under proper control have been announced by a local owners’ group.
The Ambassador Scheme has been launched by the New Forest Dog Owners Group, and comes off the back of a meeting held by the organisation last year in Brockenhurst which was attended by 80 local dog businesses, pet shops, trainers and suppliers.
It is hoped the initiative, which is being developed in partnership with local businesses, will engage pet owners to encourage them to be more mindful of the ways their animals behave.
Heather Gould, chair of the organisation, said: “Most dog owners are responsible, but clearly there are many who are not, and that harms the reputation of all.
“We talk about this in groups with the local authorities and others about responsible ownership, but this doesn’t reach owners. So, we’re really grateful for the support of our new ambassadors to spread the message, talking directly with owners.”
So far, six local businesses have signed up to the scheme by agreeing to talk to pet owners about how to be responsible, for example by picking up after dogs and keeping them under control on walks.
But NFDog is hoping many more will join up and it is currently promoting the initiative to its 1,400 members via its website and phone app.
One of the businesses taking part in the scheme is Healthy Pet Store in Totton.
Owner Deborah Burrows said: The New Forest can seem like one giant playground to some dogs. Dogs have no concept of right and wrong so it’s up to us to try to manage their interactions with it.
“It’s about finding an appropriate outlet to meet dogs’ needs whilst being aware of the impact of humans and dogs on the land.
“Thankfully, the region is supported by a network of excellent trainers who are able to provide the type of training needed for this unique environment and its challenges.”
Among the businesses which have agreed to be ambassadors so far are food suppliers, a dog physiotherapist, dog walkers and groomers.
Founded in 2001 the NFDog believes “passionately” about retaining the “traditional freedom” of walking dogs in the Forest freely. It promotes good ownership and welfare for dogs and works closely with authorities to maintain these.
