ONE of the Prime Minister's famous ‘death stares’ was unleashed on New Forest East MP Julian Lewis when they clashed in parliament over her Brexit plans.

He earned one of Theresa May’s frosty glares for interrupting and repeatedly challenging her at a cross-party meeting of senior MPs over the issue of future border arrangements between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.

Dr Lewis has promised to vote against Mrs May’s withdrawal agreement, and claimed that the prospect of a “hard border” was being used as a way of “forcing” the UK to stay in a customs union with the EU.

Pressing Mrs May more than half a dozen times to explain how a barrier would be constructed, he said: “Unless they are anticipating sending in the EU army to build it for them, it would never be built.

“So the whole thing amounts to an excuse to keep us entangled with the European Union for fear of building a border that is never going to happen under any scenario whatsoever. That is the truth, isn’t it?”

Dr Lewis interrupted Mrs May as she went on to explain that although the government would do “everything in our power not to have a hard border”, it also depended on the Irish leadership and the EU.

Dr Lewis finished: “I have to stop now, but I can only note that you have not shown who would physically erect it, and the answer is no one.”

Mrs May glared for several seconds as another MP interrogated her.
