New Forest golfers hit the fairway as courses reopen

Burley Golf Club has re-opened to members.
Burley Golf Club has re-opened to members.

GOLFERS in the New Forest have dusted off their clubs and got back out on courses after the government reduced lockdown restrictions in England last Sunday.

The announcement also permitted water sports, tennis and angling with social distancing measures in place, but elite-level sport has been put on hold until 1st June.

Several new rules have been implemented by governing bodies to make golf safe amid coronavirus restrictions. A maximum of two golfers from separate households are allowed to play together provided they comply with a two-metre distancing rule, or with one other person from within your family group.

Clubhouses will also remain closed or restricted, no touching of the flag is permitted, bunker rakes are banned and the holes will be partially filled to prevent the ball from dropping.

A statement from governing body England Golf added: “Social distancing rules must be strictly adhered to at all times.

“Further clarification is being sought from government relating to retail and driving ranges as well as the carrying out of club fitting and coaching sessions. Any updates will be communicated in due course.”

Burley, Barton-on-Sea and New Forest are among the clubs to have reopened to members, while Lymington Golf Centre, which opens tomorrow, has also started to take limited bookings, but has recommended calling ahead to avoid congestion on the course.

Burley Golf Club chairman Peter Bryant told the A&t: “Following notice by the government and England Golf,

Burley Golf Club, like others in the region, will reopen on Wednesday 13th May, albeit with a number of restrictions to maintain the safety of both players and staff at the club.

“Due to the current Covid-19 legislation, play is initially being restricted to singles or two-balls. While the course is open, and in great condition, the clubhouse remains closed, until further restrictions are lifted by the government and England Golf.”

New Forest Golf Club posted on their Facebook page: “We are pleased to announce that New Forest Golf Club will reopen Wednesday 13th May, in line with the latest government advice. Members only for the time being and tee times must be booked via BRS or the office. Various other common-sense measures in place.”
