New Forest hotel makes star appearance in Netflix's The Crown
A HIT drama series about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II recorded scenes in a Brockenhurst hotel.
Netflix’s The Crown, which is the second most expensive show ever made behind Game of Thrones, filmed parts of the third series at Rhinefield House Hotel.
It cost more than £100m to make the first two series, which was the most spent on a show until HBO’s final run of Game of Thrones this year.
Helena Bonham-Carter and Olivia Colman were among the show’s stars who stayed at the 19th century New Forest mansion. They were joined by up to 90 crew members who filmed there over two-and-a-half days.
The hotel’s management confirmed that 19 cast members stayed at the hotel and shot scenes inside and around its outdoor pool.
A hotel spokesman said: “It was a very lucrative piece of business and very beneficial for the hotel. It’s an amazing venue and no surprise people are inspired to use it for their productions.”
The hotel was used to film scenes set in Balmoral, Scotland. Prior to filming, furniture was replaced to reflect the 1970s setting.
As the New Forest is Crown land, special permission is required for any commercial photography or filming. This can be granted through Film: New Forest who work closely with the district council, Creative England and Forestry England.
New Forest District Council’s economic development manager, Matt Callaghan, said: “This is not the first time that one of our New Forest locations has been used to double as another location.
"We have previously seen Beaulieu River as Miami and Lymington Quay as the Shambles in York.
“This underlines the versatility of the New Forest as a filming location and the wide range of productions we can attract.”
Since the inception of Film: New Forest, the project's leaders say it has generated more than £3m spent on local goods and services.
The Crown’s third series will be released on Netflix on Sunday 17th November.
