New Forest East MP Sir Julian Lewis queries Network Rail's consultation results into reopening of Waterside railway

A NEW Forest MP has questioned why detailed results of a public consultation into the reopening of the Waterside railway line have not been made public amid concerns some locals' views on the scheme are being overlooked.

Sir Julian Lewis said the recent survey by Network Rail, which showed 84% of participants backed the return of the service, failed to show responses for specific areas such as Marchwood, where residents are more likely to be affected by an increase in trains.

The New Forest East MP told the A&T he was concerned that the results could hide pockets of local objection to the scheme and said he remained "sceptical" about the viability of the railway.

He added: "I remain concerned at attempts to disregard reasonable doubts and objections. The upgrading of the A326 should remain our top priority."

Those against the scheme have previously raised concerns over the the cost, impact on existing bus and ferry services, lack of car parking at Hythe and Marchwood stations, and disruption at level crossings, such as at Totton and Marchwood.

As reported in the A&T, Network Rail confirmed it was looking at the possibility of resuming passenger services twice an hour from Totton to Marchwood and Hythe, with the potential to carry on to Fawley.

Marchwood station would be revamped and a new one built at Hythe, with options for Jones Lane or New Road.

The consultation results showed out of just over 1,500 responses 84% said the scheme offered "an improved public transport offering for the Waterside area".

The proportion saying they would make use of the service was 80%.

Sir Julian has submitted a written parliamentary question asking the transport secretary for his view on whether the results should be presented overall or broken down into sub-divisions of the area through which the reinstated service would operate.

He asked: "For what reason is Network Rail refusing to release the results of the survey which are specific to the Marchwood ward of New Forest District Council?"

Responding, rail minister Huw Merriman said: "Network Rail undertook a public consultation during the summer of 2022 as part of its assessment of the case for reopening the Waterside line as part of the Restoring Your Railway initiative.

"I understand that publication of detailed responses for the Marchwood ward could place Network Rail in breach of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)."
