New Milton Sand and Ballast shines spotlight on female employees for International Women’s Day




A NEW Milton construction company is shining a spotlight on females in the industry for International Women’s Day.

New Milton Sand and Ballast – one of New Milton’s largest employers in – says it is committed to fostering an inclusive environment.

With women comprising more than 17% of their workforce – about 2% more than the industry standard, the firm says – NMSB says it has implemented flexible working arrangements, championed women in leadership, improved welfare facilities, introduced leadership training, and is amplifying the visibility of women in the industry.

NMSB builders’ merchant manager Karen Dickie has spent over 30 years in traditionally male-dominated construction supply industry.

Starting in 1984, she has seen significant changes.

She said: "I fell into it by accident and I’m still here 30 years later, genuinely because I love what I do,” adding her passion for customer service and continuous learning has been a driving force throughout her career.

She continued: "When I first came into the industry, one of the biggest challenges was sexism. But it was down to proving yourself and showing you’re capable."

Reflecting on the industry's transformation, Karen added: "The business is constantly changing. I always say ‘every day’s a school day’."

HR director Gemma Lund said the company was a “firm believer” in local talent: “The recent addition of three female trainees demonstrates our commitment to diversifying the industry and providing opportunities for fulfilling careers."

Founded in 1936, the company supplies building materials and services across Hampshire and Dorset.

Last year it won the Sustainable Green Investment Award at the Hampshire Business Awards, and the Solent SME Growth 100 Leadership Team of the Year award.
