New Milton leisure centre evacuated after flames broke out in air circulation system

NEW Milton leisure centre was evacuated after a small blaze this afternoon (Tuesday).

Some customers escaped the building wearing just their swimming costumes.

According to the fire service, flames broke out in an air circulation system at the site in Gore Road but they were out by the time crews arrived.

Teams attended at about 3.30pm from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service alongside colleagues from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A Hampshire fire service spokesperson said: "We found a small fire within an air circulation system, which was out on arrival.

"Crews inspected the scene before leaving just before 4.30pm."

An A&T reporter witnessed customers being allowed in shortly before 5pm.

The webpage of the centre, which is run by Freedom Leisure, said earlier: "Apologies for any inconvenience this has caused and we will provide more information as soon as we can."

Shortly after customers were allowed back in, a Freedom Leisure spokesperson told the A&T: "The local fire department has attended New Milton Health & Leisure Centre following a successful evacuation of the facility.

"An investigation conducted by the New Milton fire department found there had not been a fire on the premises and have since deemed the facility safe to reopen.

"We wish to thank our customers and colleagues for their quick response."

New Forest District Council, which owns the site, directed enquiries to Freedom Leisure.
