New Milton Rugby Club keep the faith with convincing win over Fareham Heathens
NEW MILTON played some great team rugby, outscoring Fareham Heathens by nine tries to three in their Hants Premier fixture last Saturday.
All Milton’s tries were scored by different players and they also gave two more of last season’s colts, Campbell Golding and Jude Payne, an opportunity to play first team rugby, teenager Golding capping a great debut with the Man of the Match award.
Milton were quickly into the Fareham 22 and from a five-metre line-out Lyndon Booker broke through around the front of the line-out and scored.
Another try quickly followed when Adam Lavis collected a long Fareham kick ahead on the Milton line. He ran along the touch line past tackle attempts, passing to Chris Conacher on half-way who played in Nathan Smith to cross the white wash.
Fareham replied when their full back collected a kick ahead on his 22 and ran right through Milton’s tackle attempts before touching down under the posts.
There were no further scores until just before half-time when Lavis took a quick penalty and ran through to touch down and back to convert it for a half-time 17-7 Milton lead.
After the break, Milton were quickly into scoring mode. Firstly, Ali Gunn touched down a kick ahead, and then a rolling maul following a line-out gave Julian Whittle a score.
From another line-out in the Fareham 22, Jack Corbett collected a high ball and then broke through tackle attempts to score. Teenager Golding demonstrated his speed following up kicks ahead and was rewarded with a score, converted by Gunn.
All this action was leaving Milton exposed to attack and Gunn was quickly involved making a try saving tackle.
Normal service was resumed when after forward pressure in the Fareham 22, Milton’s Andy George broke through to touch down.
Fareham immediately responded by scoring a converted try and from the kick-off A. George followed up well, gaining possession of the ball. He headed for the line where he was held up but able to pass to Josh Rehel to touch down for Milton’s final try which was well converted by Campbell Golding.
Fareham had the last word, scoring the final try when their speedy centre ran clear to touch down in the corner. The score was well converted, leaving New Milton the winners by 51 points to 21.
