BCP Council launches new plan to tackle flytipping

A NEW campaign has been launched by BCP Council to combat flytipping by highlighting the problem and the penalties for offenders.

The Your Waste, Your Duty was unveiled with figures showing that between September 2021 and July 2022, the council responded to more than 1,700 cases with its partner, Waste Investigation Support and Enforcement (WISE).

Around 320 fines were handed out and about 826 business inspections were carried out, resulting in 305 fixed penalties being served.

The campaign is aimed at making people take responsibility to look after their own rubbish and raise awareness of what is considered flytipping.

It will also encourage the use of BCP Council’s recycling centres and promotes its New to You scheme which gives unwanted items a new lease of life.

Cllr Mark Anderson, cabinet member for environment and place, said: “We recognise that some people only associate flytipping with dumped rubbish in woodlands and other rural areas, but it applies to people that leave overflowing waste on the side of the roads, too.

“Importantly everyone should be aware that rubbish left outside your property but not on your property is considered flytipping and you are at risk of receiving a fixed penalty notice.”

Cllr Bobbie Dove, cabinet member for safety and regulatory services, added: “We have a zero-tolerance flytipping policy.

"No one wants to live in an area that is littered with rubbish on the streets, which is why enforcement is key.”
