ExxonMobil extends public consultation over proposed Solent CO₂ pipeline project for Fawley refinery
An oil firm is extending the public consultation period over its controversial proposed carbon pipeline project which could cut through the New Forest.
As reported by the A&T, ExxonMobil has unveiled three proposed routes for the Solent CO2 Pipeline Project, pumping the refinery’s captured carbon dioxide under the seabed off the Isle of Wight.
The 20-mile ‘mainland’ route cuts through the national park, while the others are 16 and 15 miles long respectively, running south from Fawley under the seabed and across the island.
The firm is inviting public feedback, which initially finished on 12th September. However, this has now been pushed back to 6pm on 30th September.
A spokesperson for the Fawley power plant operator said: “In response to feedback from consultees, we have decided to extend the consultation to give you more time to have your say.”
ExxonMobil also organised a dozen public consultations about the proposed pipeline, including five in the Forest.
At a consultation at Boldre Memorial Hall, Angela Norman, from Lymington, said: “I feel sort of in favour of what is being proposed. I think the route which causes the least impact to the Forest should be the one adopted.”
Disagreeing, Pippa Stevenson, from Hordle, said: “I think it is terrible. I have real concerns with it. What is the future with this? What else could be stored there, and how long will this go on for?”
