One seriously hurt in six-vehicle crash on M27

A MAN had to be cut free from a van following a six-vehicle collision which caused major congestion on the M27 at Cadnam yesterday afternoon.

The incident, took place on the westbound carriageway between junctions one and two shortly after 4.30pm, leaving the 66-year-old casualty trapped.

Firefighters rushed to the scene, and the crews from Eastleigh, Redbridge and

St Mary’s spent about an hour releasing him before he was handed over to paramedics.

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesperson said he had suffered serious leg injuries.

The entire stretch of carriageway had been closed off between the two junctions, and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance landed on the road.

Several land ambulances also attended, and the patient was taken by road to Southampton General Hospital.

Delays of up to half an hour were reported as police diverted rush-hour traffic off the slip-road onto the A31 to rejoin the motorway at the next on-slip.

The closure was lifted around 7pm once the crash scene had been cleared, but delays remained in place for some time afterwards.
