Stopping near the Rufus Stone Esso, Alan left the vehicle and crossed to the westbound side of the carriageway where the collision took place.

Paying tribute on behalf of the family, Alan's brother John said: “This was a huge shock to everyone. Our family are devastated that Alan has gone.

“He probably didn't know how much he would be missed. He was deep down a lovely person, but has struggled with life over time.

“To anyone over the years who was kind to my brother, I am eternally grateful.”
