Pensioner Michael Carter of Fawley admits £15,000 benefits fraud as New Forest District Council says it is ‘committed’ to tackling the crime
A WATERSIDE pensioner who admitted fraudulently claiming over £15,000 of benefits has appeared in court.
Michael Carter (75) of Fry Close, Fawley, claimed housing and council tax benefits between 21st September 2020 and 1st October 2023.
Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court heard how he dishonestly failed to notify New Forest District Council of a change in his circumstances – paid weekly employment with earnings exceeding £150 – which would affect his entitlement to the payments.
He previously pleaded guilty to two counts of dishonestly failing to notify a change of circumstances affecting entitlement to social security benefit/advantage/payment.
As well as being ordered to pay back the money, Carter was handed a 12-month community order, which includes 100 hours of unpaid work, and court costs.
New Forest District Council’s cabinet member for finance and corporate services, Cllr Jeremy Heron, said: “We have a duty to protect public funds and recognise the various forms of fraud that can threaten this responsibility. As part of our commitment to safeguarding public resources, we are proactive in identifying and prosecuting benefit fraud.
“We are committed to tackling fraud and will not tolerate these acts in the administration of our responsibilities. By maintaining a vigilant stance, we ensure that public funds are used appropriately and that those who attempt to exploit the system are held accountable."
