Giving evidence, the woman said that, during sex, she had told him to stop – "but he continued anyway".

She said Smedburg had beat her, and left her with a split lip and black eyes.

The jury was shown photographs of her injuries.

She said: "I had bruises, scratch marks, handprints.”

The woman claimed Smedburg had thrown her to the floor and threatened her with a knife.

She said: "I thought he was going to kill me."

Cross-examined by defence barrister Rose Burns, the woman denied she was a drinker and had turned up unfit for work several times.

The woman also rejected a suggestion she had attacked Smedburg who had then pushed her in self-defence.

She denied throwing bottles at Smedburg and biting his arm.

She also said she had not “made up false allegations” that Smedburg had attacked her.

The trial continues.
