PICTURE GALLERY: Hull edges Young in first Rose Ladies event at Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club
WORLD number 25 Charley Hull holed a 15-foot birdie putt to beat event organiser Liz Young in the first Rose Ladies Series event at Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club.
Hull scored a double-bogey on the 17th hole to put her back to level par with Young to send the tournament to a play-off. However, England's number one held her nerve to claim the £5,000 prize pot.
Young, who is a Ladies European Tour professional from Brokenhurst Manor, was three over through 12 holes but pulled it back to even after she holed her six-iron shot on the par-four 13th for an eagle and birdied the 15th.
Hull told the A&T that it was a tough challenge around the New Forest course: "It was playing tricky. I've never played here before, and it was playing long. I was quite happy with my score, and I thought I played well."
Young told the A&T: "I lost to a birdie, so I'm never going to complain about that."
Great success
She added that she was delighted with the occasion at her home course: "I'm just happy that the event was a success. The girls have loved it, the members have loved it so I would say that event one was a great success."
"It's just a dream come true. The preparation only started about three weeks ago, and it was fantastic to hit the first tee shot and to see all of my friends again, it's been so long!"
Young continued: "I can't thank the members, the staff, the greenkeepers enough. I want to thank the Badgers maintenance group too as they have worked so hard for this. I hope they all enjoyed the day and the course looked fantastic."
Fantastic day
Brokenhurst Manor club manager Kevin Light said that the event was a huge achievement for the club: "It has been a fantastic day. You couldn't have written the script.
"Six months ago, we couldn't have even of dreamed of hosting this but with Jason MacNiven at Golf Principles, the clubhouse team and the course management team, the club is going from strength to strength."
Light added: "We don't want to be that hidden gem anymore, we want to be a club that promotes ourselves, and that's where we are taking it."
