A DEVELOPER has submitted plans for the first phase of a large estate on the edge of Pennington.

Bargate Homes wants outline planning permission for 110 homes – of which 55 will be open market. The remaining half comprises 38 social, affordable and market rent dwellings and 17 affordable ownership properties.

The site, south of the A337 Milford Road, is the southern part of Strategic Site 5 (SS5) of New Forest District Council’s Local Plan and consists of two parcels of land on almost opposite sides of the A337.

Bargate ultimately wants to build 140 homes on the southern section over two phases – matching the number NFDC allocated for it.

The site is currently agricultural, neighboured by grazing land and a chicken farm and orchard. Bargate says it will propose more homes in a second phase at a later date.

Bargate “commits” in the application to deliver a sustainable development with “high quality homes and landscape providing a sense of community for residents”. The design would reflect the character of the local area and enhance the existing public transport network, it promises.

in the A&T the company has said there is a “pressing need for new homes in Pennington and the wider New Forest” due to a shortage of low-cost housing. It cited the neighbouring national park as the most expensive in the country to buy a property.reportedAs

It has already carried out a public consultation, during which some residents welcomed the plans by Bargate – whose parent company Vivid is one of the largest housing associations in the UK.

However, councillors raised concerns about flooding and smells from a sewage plant near the area. They also questioned the impact it could have on the A337 and whether Bargate might push for more homes on phase two should it get phase one approval.
