Fundraising page launched by FurBuddies Rescue in Hordle for shar pei dogs dumped on Ashley Road

A FUNDRAISING page has been set up to pay for urgent medical treatment needed for two dogs dumped at the side of the road.

The 18-month-old shar pei brother and sister were left on Ashley Road in February and subsequently spotted by a man who managed to coax them into his car.

He took them to FurBuddies Animal Rehoming Centre in Hordle, where it was found that while the dogs did have microchips they were not registered to an owner.

Owner Neil Arnold said: “We put their photos up on social media, and were eventually contacted by people who said they had been dumped by a lady living in Hythe.

“She had left them in Ashley to try to avoid them being traced back to her.”

Mr Arnold added: “When they came in the male was underweight, and both had bad skin infections.”

He said vet examinations revealed both dogs needed urgent eye operations costing £1,500 for each. They also discovered the female shar pei was pregnant, probably by her sibling.

“If they do not have these operations they will be left in agony and could eventually go blind,” continued Mr Arnold. “There are fears that if the pups have been sired by the brother, they may have genetic problems – if they survive.”

The dogs, named Mulan and Mushu, have had treatment for their skin infections which have “improved them greatly”. Once the dogs have had further treatment, Mr Arnold says he will look for new homes for them.

“When they came in, the male was especially nervous and afraid of people, but he is now really friendly,” said Mr Arnold. “They both love lots of cuddles and attention.

“They are both lovely dogs, and it’s sad the owner did not seek help in rehoming them.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up, with £2,500 already raised.

Mr Arnold said: “All the money raised will be spent on the operations, and any other vet treatment they may need. Shar peis are prone to skin infections, but these can be managed by diet and bathing.”
