Hampshire police investigating Cllr Alexis McEvoy over Ian Wright 'typical black hypocrite' tweet
HAMPSHIRE police has confirmed it is investigating a New Forest councillor after she called football pundit Ian Wright a "typical black hypocrite" on Twitter.
Former Conservative member Cllr Alexis McEvoy wrote the now-deleted message at the weekend, provoking accusations of racism.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has now said it is looking into the tweet as a possible offence.
They told the A&T: "We can confirm that we have received a report in relation to tweets posted by a New Forest councillor.
"This was reported to us on 14th March and the allegation is being investigated."
They added: "We ask that anyone with information contacts us on 101, quoting the reference 44230102444."
Cllr McEvoy made the comment following Gary Linker's criticism of the government's language on immigration.
She said in a statement this week she was "deeply sorry" and had reported herself for investigation by the councils and suspended herself from the Tory party.
She added: "I find racism in any form abhorrent."
She represents Fawley, Blackfield and Langley on New Forest District Council and South Waterside on Hampshire County Council, and is also a member of the New Forest National Park Authority.
She is now listed as an Independent on both NFDC and HCC's websites.
Mr Wright responded this week, saying: “I just want to say to her: please, just keep your fake apology to yourself.”
Cllr Malcolm Wade, leader of NFDC’s Liberal Democrat opposition group, has urged NFDC’s Tory leader Cllr Jill Cleary to take “robust” action.
