THE Men’s Shed scheme, which aims to combat loneliness, is setting up shop in Ringwood.

Having been encouraged to explore opportunities in the town by former mayor Tim Ward, the Men’s Shed Organisation will hold a public meeting on Monday.

The intention is to set up a shed in the town as a charitable enterprise and feature a workshop where items can be repaired, recycled or sold.

It would be open five days a week to members, and it is hoped the scheme will partner with community organisations to help them out in various ways.

Having started in Australia a few years ago, the fast-growing Men’s Shed movement is aimed at older men in particular, as the end of their working life can lead to isolation and the loss of a sense of purpose.

In the UK there are now 534 sheds and a further 141 in development with more than 12,000 men involved.

“The aim of the shed is to provide a meeting place for people who find they have too much time on their hands and may lack a sense of purpose for reasons such as retirement, unemployment or bereavement,” Mr Ward, said.

“Sheds enrich lives by combating feelings of loneliness and isolation some may experience at certain times, helping to improve mental and physical health.”

The public meeting will be held in the Ringwood Gateway council offices on Monday 27th January at 2.30pm.

Membership forms will be available and enquiries welcomed from those interested in filling the committee roles including treasurer, secretary, publicity and IT and data manager.
