Public warned by verderers to steer clear of New Forest pony drifts
THE public has been urged to keep clear of the pony round-ups in the New Forest this week.
While the drifts are taking place, some car parks and cycle routes will be shut to allow the fast-paced mounted operations to go ahead.
A verderers spokesperson said: "The drifts are an essential part of the management of the Forest herd.
"For your own safety, members of the public are urged to look out for the warning signs and avoid the area of the drift on the planned dates.
"Please respect the temporary car park closures, use an alternative car park and please do not block gateways or verge-park."
Tomorrow (Wednesday) car parks will be shut at Turf Hill and Telegraph Hill, near Fritham.
On Friday parking will be shut at Ocknell Pond, Cadmans Pool, Spring Bushes and Milkham, also near Fritham. The cycle route across Broomy Plain will be closed for the duration of the drift.
On Sunday the public are asked to stay away from the drift at Backley, near Burley.
