Pupils from Blackfield Primary School plant trees for late Queen's Green Canopy scheme at Fawley Fields
PUPILS from Blackfield Primary School helped grow the Green Canopy scheme of trees celebrating the legacy of the late Queen.
They joined representatives from New Forest District Council to plant 304 young oak and beech saplings at Fawley Fields.
They also added a field of bulbs which will bring a colourful start to spring next year.
As part of her platinum jubilee the Queen had asked for a Green Canopy to be planted across the UK.
Cllr David Russell, NFDC cabinet member holder for people and places, said: “On behalf of the council, I would like to say a big thank you to the school children and staff for their enthusiasm and for being a part of this project.
“The site at Fawley Fields provides a wonderful space for the community and a special tribute to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and I hope our residents will enjoy it.”
Head teacher Tariq Sasso said the pupils had “thoroughly enjoyed themselves” carrying out the task.
He said: “They know how important it is to look after our environment and I know they found it special to build something that would help remember the Queen.
“They are going to share what they've done with the rest of the school during an assembly after the Christmas holidays and will be planting some trees on our school field too, as they have been so inspired.”
