Fordingbridge pupils have fun in Cala class to avoid building site dangers

PUPILS at Fordingbridge Junior School have been learning how to stay safe and avoid the dangers of playing near construction sites.

The session for some 200 children was part of a curriculum-based school programme hosted by Cala Homes (Southern).

The ‘stay safe, stay away’ initiative was hosted by Steve Morris, Cala’s group health and safety executive manager, who provided an interactive session that uncovered the history of building houses and gave pupils the opportunity to dress up in the protective equipment, while learning that construction sites are not somewhere to play around.

The initiative is an essential part of Cala Homes’ community pledge which it delivers as part of its Knightwood Chase development near the school. In this the housebuilders commit to providing positive social impacts to the areas it builds through community engagement initiatives.

Kim Robertson, the school’s executive head teacher, thanked Steve and said: "Our children live on, or very near, to numerous building sites, so the importance of being aware, safe, and staying away was a message that we wanted the children to hear which Cala helped deliver. Our children thoroughly enjoyed the session and learnt a great deal from it."
