Remembrance Day: Services set for New Milton, Lymington, Lyndhurst, Ringwood, Christchurch, Highcliffe, Barton, Milford, Totton and Eling, Brockenhurst, Copythorne, Fawley, Bransgore, Hordle and Tiptoe, and Hythe
COMMUNITIES throughout the New Forest are preparing to come to a halt so people can pay their respects to the fallen on Remembrance Day.
All the events and times given below are for Sunday, unless otherwise stated.
New Milton
A parade will set out from Crossmead Avenue car park at 10.45am, heading to the war memorial at the recreation ground for a two-minute silence at 11am.
A town council spokesperson said the wreathlaying will take place at 11.30am, followed by a service of remembrance at the nearby memorial centre in Whitefield Road, beginning at 11.45am.
The New Forest Crematorium and Memorial Gardens in Stem Lane will host a moment of reflection in its grounds at 10am.
Lymington
St Thomas’ Church will host a service, including an outside broadcast, from 10am to 10.45am. This will be followed by an act of remembrance at the town’s war memorial at 10.55am.
A remembrance concert will be held on Saturday 9th November from 7pm.
Christchurch and Highcliffe
People will gather for a service at Purewell Cross war memorial at 9.15am, followed by a procession including Royal British Legion members and Armed Forces personnel.
A wreathlaying ceremony will take place at the garden of remembrance at the Priory Church at 10.15am, prior to the commencement of the main remembrance service at 10.50am, including a two minutes’ silence.
The Friends of the New Forest Airfields will host a service at their memorial off Black Lane in Bransgore at 11am.
St Mark’s Church in Highcliffe will host a community service of remembrance at 10am, followed by a procession to the local war memorial at 10.55am for an 11am act of remembrance.
Lyndhurst
St Michael’s Church is hosting a service at 10.45am. This will by followed by a parade setting out from the church at 11.50am for the village war memorial, where wreaths will be laid ahead of a scheduled RAF flypast at 12.30pm.
Lyndhurst’s Royal British Legion chairman Adrian Wiltshire told the A&T: “The parade will include Marchwood’s Port and Maritime Regiment. We won’t have quite so many serving personnel in the parade this year because there are so many deployed in conflicts all around the world.”
Mr Wiltshire said representatives of Allied nations have been invited for the first time to lay wreaths at the village memorial this year, with representatives from France, the US and Canada confirmed to attend.
Ringwood
A number of commemorative services are taking place over several days, with a town council spokesperson saying: “This will be an opportunity for people to come together to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of all those that defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.”
There will be a service on Saturday 2nd November at the war graves in Ringwood cemetery. People are invited to meet in the cemetery car park at 10.45am to walk to the graves and lay poppy crosses.
On Remembrance Sunday, there will be various services around the town, after which a parade will set out from Market Place at 11.30am.
The council spokesperson added: “Shortly after, those assembled will process to the war memorial garden where there will be a short service followed by the formal act of remembrance at noon.
“This will be followed by a formal wreathlaying ceremony and a procession back to Market Place.”
Members of the public are invited to attend and lay their own tributes at the appropriate time. A short road closure will be in place to allow the procession to take place safely.
On Armistice Day, Monday 11th November, there will be a service at Ringwood’s war memorial at 10.45am, and at 11am for the national two minutes’ silence.
In accordance with local tradition, the start and end of the silence will be marked by the firing of a maroon which will be heard around the town.
Totton and Eling
A parade will set out from Beaumont Road at 10am, heading to the war memorial off Salisbury Road for a wreathlaying service at 10.35am, and two minutes’ silence at 11am.
Brockenhurst
St Saviour’s Church will host a service at 9.45am, followed by another service at the war memorial in Sway Road at 10.50am, with a cash collection for the Royal British Legion afterwards. There will also be a short service of remembrance at the memorial at 10.50am on Monday 11th November.
Milford
Geoff Coop from Ashley Baptist Church will lead a service at Milford on Sea Baptist Church from 10.30am to 11.40am. A service will be held at the Keyhaven war memorial at 2pm, followed by a service at All Saints’ Church at 3pm. There will also be a Remembrance Sunday concert at All Saints’ Church at 5pm.
Barton
A brief act of remembrance will take place at the town’s Indian war memorial obelisk at 3pm.
Copythorne
St Mary’s Church’s remembrance service will begin at 10.50am and will be followed by a parade to the local war memorial. Ocean Brass Band will perform a remembrance concert at Colbury Memorial Hall from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Tickets are priced £10 for adults and £5 for children on the door, with all proceeds going to the Poppy Appeal. Refreshments will be available.
On Monday 11th November a two-minute silence will be observed at the town’s Royal British Legion hall.
Fawley
A remembrance parade through the village will set out from The Falcon car park at 2pm to arrive at All Saints’ Church at 3pm for a service. There will be a rolling road closure in place from 2.30pm to 3pm, from Fawley village to All Saints Church, to facilitate the parade. The road closures will happen again in reverse from 3.45pm to 4pm when the parade returns.
Bransgore
There will be an act of remembrance at 9am at Thorney Hill war memorial, and a wreathlaying service at the village’s war graves at 9.30am. St Mary the Virgin Church in Ringwood Road will host a service at 10am, followed by a 10.30am parade to the war memorial, a wreathlaying service and two minutes’ silence at 11am. Bransgore Probus Group will again be taking part in the service.
Hordle and Tiptoe
All Saints’ Church in Hordle will host a service at 9.30am followed by an act of remembrance at the local war memorial at 10.45am. St Andrew’s Church in Tiptoe will host a service at 10.15am, with an act of remembrance on Tiptoe Green at 3pm.
Hythe
The town’s sea scouts, beavers, cub and explorers will attend a service running from 10.15am to noon at St John’s Church and Prospect Place. The service will be followed by a parade and dedication service in the town’s garden of remembrance.
• South Western Railway said it will once again offer free travel for serving military personnel and veterans attending events on Remembrance Sunday. The offer is available to anyone travelling in uniform or carrying an appropriate form of identification.
