Huge spider crab mural by artist ATM adorns Hythe Pier thanks to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust

A MURAL of a giant spider crab has been unveiled on Hythe pier to inspire people to find out more about the sea.

The image by London street artist Mark Anthony – known as ATM – was commissioned by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust via an online poll for the most popular marine creature.

ATM is famous for his nature-inspired art which juxtaposes portraits of wildlife with urban areas.

Part of the trust’s annual Secrets of the Solent project, funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund, the artwork is aimed at raising awareness of local marine habitats and wildlife.

ATM said: “I wanted it to look alive as if it was on its sea floor home so included some green algae on its back, which the crab uses as a form of living camouflage.”

“That’s what’s so fascinating about painting murals for Secrets of the Solent; as well as being privileged to paint such beautiful creatures I always learn something new and remarkable about each one.”

Alan Titheridge, of the Hythe Pier Heritage Association, said it was “honoured” to host the mural, adding: “We are looking forward to visitors coming along to view our spider crab and hope it will promote a greater understanding of the need to preserve our local marine environment.”
