Restoration work at St Matthew’s Church in Netley Marsh expected to resume this winter as fundraising continues

THE restoration of a New Forest church is expected to recommence towards the end of the year as the community continues to fundraise for the work.

St Matthew’s in Netley Marsh closed its doors in October last year to begin repairs to the main floor, which had damp issues due to high water levels in the crypt.

Work to the chancel floor, which also had signs of deterioration, was due to be carried out in a few years time once more money is raised.

However, upon excavating the church floor it was discovered that the nave and chancel floor had started to subside and was suffering from tree root ingress, forcing a halt to the main floor renovation.

The community has spent years fundraising, with £70,000 achieved so far through fairs, bake sales, donations from local companies, and events such as the village carnival and annual Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show.

Vicar the Rev John Reeve has also run numerous marathons in recent years to fundraise for the work, including events in Paris, Valencia and Nice.

The additional works are estimated to cost at least a further £50,000.

Dave Martin, who is part of the congregation, told the A&T: “We engaged a structural engineer who has provided a design to support the floor. Quotes have been received to carry out this work [and] we have also dug a trench alongside the east wall to treat the tree roots and stop any further damage.

“Currently our vicar and church wardens are making grant applications for any funding that may be available to help with the restoration but, as ever, our congregation’s efforts are the main source of funding.

“We hope to restart work mid-November, beginning of December.”

The funds raised have been boosted by another £1,000 thanks to Tendring Care Home in Totton.

The church’s next fundraiser is a Christmas fayre on 16th November between 2pm and 4pm.
