Rich List landowner and friend to the royals Sir George Meyrick dies at 78
SIR George Meyrick, one of the area’s wealthiest landowners and a close friend to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, has died aged 78.
Sir George was the seventh baronet of Hinton Admiral and featured regularly on the Sunday Times rich list. This year he was equal 914th with an estimated fortune of £129m.
He succeeded to the title in 1988 and lived at his family’s ancestral home at Hinton Admiral which it has occupied since the first decade of the 18th century.
He was married to Lady Jean Louise Montagu Douglas Scott for more than 50 years – the pair wed in March 1968 – and they had three children.
Their eldest son and heir, George, is married to novelist Candida Clark. A lawyer and the chairman of the Hinton Admiral Estate, he has various ambassadorial and public service roles, including as a secretary of state-appointed member of the New Forest National Park Authority.
The Meyrick family owns and manages vast swathes of land in Bransgore and Hinton as well as large areas of Bournemouth – including much of the seafront.
It also owns and runs the Bodorgan estate in Anglesey, Wales. Prince William and Kate lived in a cottage on the land when they were newlyweds and as new parents. Sir George and his heir were guests of the pair at their Royal wedding.
Sir George was born in March 1941 and christened George Christopher Cadafael Tapps Gervis Meyrick. He was the eldest of Sir George David Elliott Tapps Gervis Meyrick and Ann Elizabeth Miller’s three children.
On Companies House the late Sir George was listed as being an active director of property management company 105 Lexham Gardens Ltd.
He listed his occupation as farmer, land owner, land agent and chartered surveyor.
In the past he had been a director of 16 other organisations, including Hinton Solar Generation Ltd, New Forest Energy Ltd and The Bibury Club Ltd, a collection of racehorse owners.
