Bournemouth Crown Court trial: Ringwood man Chad Smedburg denies rape
A man on trial accused of rape ran out of the witness box at Bournemouth Crown Court sobbing "I am not a rapist, I'm not a wrong-un".
Chad Smedburg (35) of Ringwood, was being cross examined on day three of his trial for rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and strangulation.
The alleged victim has claimed that she had not wanted sex and had told the defendant this but he had "continued anyway".
Smedburg, a personal trainer, was asked by prosecutor Simon Jones about the allegations against him which include calling the woman vile names, when the defendant broke down saying: "I go wrong with my words, I do stupid things but I am not a rapist.
"This is nonsense, trying to take my life, I'm not a wrong-un." He then ran out back to the dock.
Judge Jonathan Fuller KC then ordered a break in proceedings.
Smedburg later became emotional again, telling Mr Jones: "I'm not going to be this monster, You can't make me this monster. I'm going to spend the rest of my life knowing I'm not this monster."
He added: "I'm a nice man, I treat women well."
Smedburg had previously said: “I am good to my mother, my daughter, every female around me. They all love me because I am a good person.”
He had earlier denied strangling the woman by picking her up around the neck with one hand and holding her up against a wall, saying: “It’s absolute nonsense.”
The woman also claimed Smedburg gave her a split lip. The defendant said this had only happened once after she “rushed at him” and he had pushed her in self defence saying: “I have to take responsibility for that but it was an accident.”
Smedburg also admitted that he had caused a bruise on her arm on another occasion by grabbing it adding: “I didn’t mean to assault her. I didn’t mean to cause that bruise.”
But he admitted “using force that was excessive” and, referring to a photo of the bruise, he said: “You can see the thumbprint, I was absolutely devastated when I saw it, I am not a bully.”
Asked about a video he made showing him making threats against the woman while walking around her flat, Smedburg said it happened the day after he had been attacked.
He said that she had asked him to her home where they had “dinner had sex and went to sleep.”
Smedburg said as he slept the woman had let a man she knew into her flat. The defendant claimed: “I was woken by being hit by a metal pole.” Indicating to his head, he added: “I have quite a severe scar.”
He said the next day he made the video which he sent to her, but did not remember doing it.
Smedburg maintains the woman made up the accusations of rape, ABH and strangulation, on dates mentioned in court, adding: “She is not going to make a guilty man out of me.”
