Hazel Wood Infant School on Hazel Farm Road in Totton rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted

A TOTTON school praised by Ofsted for students’ exemplary behaviour has been rated ‘outstanding’ for the second time.

Hazel Wood Infant School on Hazel Farm Road, which teaches 198 children aged four to seven, was visited by inspectors in December.

A report highlighted the “journey of opportunities” provided by the school which ensured pupils thrived and flourished.

Pupils are highly motivated in their lessons and achieve extremely well, the report said, with their behaviour “exemplary” at all times.

It added: “The school has designed a curriculum that enables all pupils to be successful.

“Barriers to learning are examined carefully and addressed for all pupils. This means that disadvantaged pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, are extremely well supported and, as a result, achieve very well.”

It praised the “highly skilled” teaching staff and said reading was taught “exceptionally well” to pupils.

The teaching of mathematics was also praised and pupils were “extremely confident and skilled” as a result.

Inspectors found pupils showed empathy and kindness and enjoyed additional activities including singing at local care homes and making pictures to be displayed in hospital wards.

Parents and carers were “overwhelmingly positive” in their feedback, it added.

The school was previously rated as ‘outstanding’ at its inspection in 2011.

Executive head teacher Jane Phillips said the school was “absolutely delighted” with the rating.

“The report really captures the essence of what it is like to be a child at Hazel Wood Infant School,” she said.

“I believe this has been achieved through our shared vision and values, outstanding staff, governors, children and our partnership with parents.”

Chair of governors, Mark Alderson, added: “This really is an achievement to be extremely proud of [and] is testament to all of the hard work and dedication by the teaching staff and everyone involved.

“It serves to reinforce what we already knew, that Hazel Wood Infant School is an amazing place for our children to start their journey in education.”
