Testwood School’s 3G pitch opened by Aaron Phipps and Louise Gardner
PARALYMPIC gold medallist Aaron Phipps has opened a new £750,000 community 3G sports pitch at his former school in Totton.
The facility at Testwood School was supported by a £120,000 grant from New Forest District Council. It also received funding from the Premier League, the FA, and the government’s Football Foundation, as part of a scheme to encourage more women and girls to play football.
Former Saints and England winger Louise Gardner, nee Cross, also joined the celebrations, along with pupils and Testwood School headteacher Tim Webber.
The community asset, which cost around £750,000 and meets World Rugby standards, will also be used for training by local rugby club Tottonians. Meanwhile, two new artificial cricket pitches will give teams in Totton & Eling, and Calmore, a new place to play and practise.
The 3G pitch was opened by Phipps – a Paralympic gold medallist in wheelchair rugby – who cut the ribbon during a day of sport and celebration.
He said: “Sport changed my life as a disabled athlete, and this is a fantastic facility which can be used in all weathers for a huge number of sports.”
The pitch is one of at least 30 across the UK part funded by The Lionesses Futures Fund – a £30m fund celebrating women’s victory in the 2022 Euros.
Testwood School community facilities manager, James Cross, said: “This state-of-the-art facility will not only enhance sporting opportunities but foster inclusivity, particularly for women and girls, offering them a space to thrive and play at the highest level.
“The partnership with local clubs such as Pace Youth FC, Tottonians Rugby FC, Totton & Eling Cricket Club, and Calmore Cricket Club underscores our shared commitment to supporting grassroots sport.”
