Speeder clocked at nearly twice the limit on the B3053 Fawley Road at Fawley

A SPEEDING motorist was caught at nearly twice the limit on a main route through Fawley during a day of crackdowns around the village.

Police joined forces with Fawley Refinery in response to complaints from residents about speeding, each using their own devices to monitor Church Lane.

An online post by local officers said “numerous” offending drivers were detected during a short period of time, but education rather than enforcement was the aim.

A police speed van stationed on the 40mph B3053 Fawley Road that day caught 18 speeders, with the highest clocked at 71mph.

“Speeds like this are clearly reckless and dangerous on local roads with lower speed limits,” the post said.

“We are all aware of speed limits, and there is no excuse for speeding, especially in residential areas, past schools etc.”

Two weeks earlier, the speed van caught 86 offenders on Beaulieu Road, Hythe.

Acknowledging that speeding was a “very marmite topic” among residents, the police Facebook post stressed it was not the only issue officers dealt with.

But it added officers have to focus on it when several reports are made about the issue which affects many residents.

The post added: “Many see this as trivial, however the difference between 30mph and 40mph can be significant when it comes to pedestrian injuries or fatalities.”
