Lepe Country Park closed to visitors due to power cut as Storm Claudio hits New Forest

VISITORS are being urged not to visit Lepe Country Park today (Tuesday) following a power cut from Storm Claudio.

Storm Claudio has been battering the south coast with high winds, heavy downpours and occasional thunder, felling trees and shutting roads.

A statement on Lepe Country Park's Facebook page said: "Due to a continued power outage, which is affecting the whole of the Lepe area, the Lookout [cafe] and park office will remain closed for the rest of the day.

"Please be advised that the play park and Lepe Point are also both closed."

It added: "Please take extra care if you visit the country park today due to the very strong winds we are experiencing. We expect to be able to open tomorrow.

"Sorry for any inconvenience caused and stay safe."

Hampshire Constabulary said it was dealing with "multiple reports" of trees down across the New Forest.

On social media officers urged motorists: "Please bear this in mind when travelling around and drive safely."

One of the affected roads was Spencer Road in New Milton after a power cable and tree came down.

A local police post on Facebook this morning said the road had been closed at the Walkers Arms.

Earlier today a downed tree also blocked the B3055 Sway Road close to the roundabout in Bashley.

In Rosewood Gardens, New Milton, a homeowner reported a large branch crashing down into their garden, narrowly missing the house.

As reported in the A&T, the Met Office issued a yellow alert for between midnight and 8am on Tuesday with Storm Claudio predicted to bring gusts of up to 70mph.
